Hilo Chen's artistic practice spans from abstraction to figurative painting, with a focus on photorealism. His main themes include classicalism and realism, influenced by his exposure to Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres' work. Chen's preferred medium is painting, and he is known for leading classicalism and realism to a new level of expression.
Hilo Chen’s first verified exhibition was New York Photo-Realist Exhibition at Christchurch Art Gallery in Christchurch in 1975, and the most recent exhibition was Through Nature to Eternity at Each Modern in Taipei in 2024. Hilo Chen is most frequently exhibited in United States, but also had exhibitions in Taiwan, United Kingdom and elsewhere. Chen has at least 3 solo shows and 19 group shows over the last 49 years (for more information, see exhibitions). Chen has also been in no less than one art fair but in no biennials. A notable show was Hilo Chen at Bernarducci.Meisel.Gallery in New York City in 2006. Other notable exhibitions were at Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taipei and National Taiwan Museum of Art in Taichung. Hilo Chen has been exhibited with Bernardo Torrens and Roberto Bernardi.
