Daughter of the King of Hungary, Elisabeth was born in Presburg in 1207. At four she was sent to Thuringia to marry Louis, future Duke of Thurinigia, then 11 years old. The marraige took place in 1220 when Louis ascended the throne at the age of 16, Elisabeth was 13. From childhood, she was pious, an enemy of frivolous pleasures and compassionate to the poor. Elisabeth distributed her possessions to the poor and the needy, assisted the women in bed and the lepers, and visited the prisoners.
